Friday, July 28 presentation of our ongoing FOURTH FRIDAY SPEAKER SERIES. This month, we featured Miguel E. Rosario-Vega, High School Music Department Chair for the Valparaiso Community Schools. Miguel highlighted the vibrant culture, the classical food, rich history and the current politics of Puerto Rico. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Miguel E. Rosario-Vega began his musical studies at an early age. At age 14 he started studying trumpet with the second trumpet of the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. During high school he served as principal trumpet of the San Juan Youth Symphony Orchestra, worked as a freelance trumpet player, and also played with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. Miguel also participated in master classes with members of the brass section of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra when the orchestra performed in Puerto Rico during the 1980 Casals Festival. His early conducting experiences occurred during rehearsals of the San Juan Youth Symphony and his high school brass ensemble. He continued his studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance (1987) and later a Master of Arts for Teachers (1993). In the summer of 1990, he attended The Conductors Institute of the University of South Carolina where he studied with Donald Portnoy and Harold Farberman. In 1994 he participated in the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Wind Conducting Workshop. While at Indiana University for his graduate degree, he taught at the Jacobs School of Music in the areas of brass techniques and music education.
