Fourth Friday – Hong Kong – Flavia Lee Cheng
Flavia Lee Cheng was born in Guangdong, China and grew up in Hong Kong. While in Hong Kong, she had an import and export firm for over 20 years, exporting mainly to Europe and a bit to the US. She also was an amateur Lifeguard. A member of the Hong Kong Lifeguard Club and The Royal Life Saving Society in Hong Kong, she represented Hong Kong in performing Life Saving skills and Synchronized swimming in various South East Asian countries.
Flavia came to the US with her late husband and her children in 1991. They ran a Chinese restaurant, Jade Garden, in Portage for 10 years, which Flavia sold when her husband passed away. She then went to Purdue North Central, earning her bachelor’s degree in Communication with a minor in English Literature. She also taught Tai Chi and Yoga for over 20 years at the Portage and Duneland YMCA’s, along with her own private practice. She worked as a volunteer in the Duneland Resale shop until it closed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, and she now volunteers teaching Tai Chi-Chi Kung (18 styles) at the Bonner Senior Center in Portage.
Flavia talked about the history of Hong Kong and how the people of Hong Kong live. She also highlighted the food and entertainment, along with recommending nice places in Hong Kong for people who want to visit or live there.
